Weight Classes

Underweight (BMI less than 18.5): Some people are by nature thin. But being underweight due to poor diet or due to disease can pose serious health risks. The are several risks by being underweight. Overweight (BMI 25-29.9): A overweight person is at risk with many weight related diseases. Diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, asthma and cancer. At this stage, having excess weight still can still reverse. The right action to take is to reduce caloric intake and increasing physical activity levels.

Obesity (BMI over 30): Obesity can lead to high risk of weight-related diseases. Diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, fatty liver, asthma and cancer. A BMI of over 35 (obesity grade 2) involves serious health risks that can affect a life many ways. It can reduce life expectancy by several years.

If your BMI is over 40 (obesity grade 3), you have an 80 percent chance of developing diabetes, compared with a normal weight person. There is also the risk of shortening life expectancy by over 10 years.
Weight classes apply to adults over 20 years of age and are set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

There is a fairly strong correlation between BMI and body fat. It varies depending on age, gender and physical activity level. Women tend to have more body fat than men with the same BMI. Even elderly often have more body fat than younger people with the same BMI.

Also, fit individuals have a high BMI because of increased muscle mass rather than increased amount of body fat. It is important to remember that BMI is only one factor when assessing risks of developing obesity-related diseases..

Other factors to look are for example, waist circumference, high blood pressure and physical inactivity.

BMI is not an appropriate measure for children and adolescents. For adults who have stopped growing, an increase in BMI is usually caused by an increase in the amount of body fat. In children, there are major differences between boys and girls, and the amount of body fat changes depending on age.
